Traditional Islamic and Persian Architecture


Muqarnas is a type of corbel employed as a decorative device in traditional Islamic and Persian architecture. Muqarnas takes the form of small pointed niches, stacked in tiers projecting beyond those below and can be constructed in brick, stone, stucco or wood. Pictured here are muqarnas of the Mausoleum Sayyida Ruqayya in Damascus, with inlay work in precious stones.
